Ingredients

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar (packed)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar, stirring until smooth.
  4. Add the eggs and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and whisk until smooth.
  5. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and fold together gently until no dry flour remains.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts (if using), reserving some chocolate chips for topping.
  7. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan, spreading it evenly and pressing reserved chocolate chips into the top.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the edges are golden brown and the center is set but slightly soft.
  9. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before slicing.

Notes

Ensure to use room temperature eggs for better incorporation. Measure flour correctly to avoid dry bars. For gooey bars, slightly underbake them.
